While working on the car, I kept as much of the paint dust as I could. When the sanding was complete, I sifted the dust into a fine powder and then mixed it all with burnt plate oil #3 to produce ink. I used the ink on a Vandercook press in the School of the Art Institute of Chicago's letterpress type shop, printing with a custom photopolymer plate from Boxcar Press. (The plate was generated by tracing and enlarging the LE tag from the back of the car.) I exhausted the gritty, viscous ink; my dust collection yielded a "Limited Edition" of 243 prints.
Each of these 243 "Limited Edition A" prints has been packaged with two other prints. The first, "Limited Edition B," was made with the same Dupli-Color Sandable Primer, #1692 Hot Rod Gray, that I used on the vehicle. The second is a colophon page that was printed on the same letterpress as "Limited Edition A" and contains a short text about the project. All three prints are on French Paper's 100lb. Recycled White Construction cover stock, sized at 19" x 12.5". Each set of prints is wrapped in brown butcher paper and sealed with blue painter's tape, the same materials I used to mask the lights, windows, and other parts during painting. A rubber stamp above the seal ensures authenticity. I've signed each print, but the edition is not numbered.
Due to the imperfect nature of the various production methods involved, each print is completely unique.
While there's certainly some poetry to be found in storing these prints in my garage forever, I'd rather do this:
